CSLB requirements

California contractor license
requirements for 2026

Here is what the Contractors State License Board actually requires, in plain language. If any of it applies to you and you're not sure how to prove it, that's what the free consultation is for.

Who qualifies

To apply for a California contractor license you must be at least 18, have a valid Social Security number or ITIN, and be able to document four years of journey-level experience in the classification you're applying for within the last ten years.

Education can substitute for part of that experience. An apprenticeship, a technical degree, or related coursework can offset up to three of the four years, leaving one year of practical experience to verify.

The two exams

Every applicant takes two closed-book exams at a CSLB testing center: the Law & Business exam, which covers contracts, lien law, employment rules, and safety, and a trade exam specific to your classification. Our courses prepare you for both.

If you already hold a California license in another classification, you may be exempt from retaking Law & Business.

Bond and insurance

  • A $25,000 contractor license bond is required on every active license.
  • Qualifying individuals acting as RMO or RME need a separate $25,000 bond.
  • Workers' compensation insurance is required if you have employees, and is mandatory for C-8, C-20, C-22, and C-39 classifications regardless of employees.
  • General liability coverage is not required by the CSLB but is expected on most commercial jobs.

What it costs

  • CSLB application fee for an original license
  • Initial license fee once you pass both exams
  • Fingerprinting and Live Scan background check
  • $25,000 surety bond premium, typically a few hundred dollars a year depending on credit
  • Exam prep and application help — that's us

Fees change, so we confirm current amounts with you at consultation rather than quoting stale numbers here.

How long it takes

Realistically, most students are licensed in three to six months. The application review at the CSLB is the slowest part and largely out of your hands, which is exactly why a clean, correctly filed application matters so much. A rejected application can add two months for no reason other than paperwork.

Why the license matters

Under California Business & Professions Code, a license is required for any project where labor and materials total $1,000 or more. Working unlicensed above that threshold exposes you to citation and, under B&P §7031, means a court can order you to return everything a customer paid you — even on work you completed properly.

Licensed contractors can pull permits, enforce their contracts, bid public works, and carry workers' comp legally.

Questions

California contractor license
questions, answered

Do you charge for the first consultation?

No. We'll review your goals, explain the process, and map out your next steps at no charge. Call any office or book online.

Will you handle my paperwork?

Yes. We complete and file everything with the CSLB, including experience verification, so it's done right the first time.

Do you only work with general contractors?

No. We help every classification — general building, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing, landscaping, painting, and the rest.

How soon can I start?

Most students begin within a week. Online courses run on a rolling start, and live workshops are scheduled regularly.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. You can start today and spread the cost out. Ask us for the options when you call.

Can you help me pick the right classification?

That's part of the free consultation. We look at the work you want to bid and match it to the correct classification so you're covered.

What if I fail the exam?

We regroup, sharpen your study plan, and get you ready to retake it. The goal is getting you licensed, however many attempts that takes.

¿Ofrecen todo en español?

Sí. Todo el equipo es bilingüe — las clases, la documentación y las actualizaciones se dan en español si así lo prefieres.
